PIPPO LIONNI - BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1954. Grew up in a New York family of architects, escaped into Philosophy and Mathematics at Portland State University and New York University, played jazz in New York and Paris, and became a designer in the late 1970’s. He brings to design a conceptual approach, of divesified influences as formalized in complex multidimensional systems: such as signage, scenography, corporate identity programs, environmental design...
His offices and partnerships: Design Pippo Lionni (1984-89), Integral Concept (1989-95), Pippo Lionni et associés (1995-97), Ldesign (founded in 1997 with his friend Arik Levy) have done major work for important clients.
He has maintained a continuing interest in design education and research: at Parsons School in Paris (1986-91); École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris, (1991-98); International public art symposium, Birmingham, 1990; INCSID/San José, USA, (1992); University of Industrial Arts of Helsinki (UIAH) / Finland, (1992); Bilkent University in Ankara, 1993; Ecole de la Cambre in Bruxelles, Belgium, (1993-95); Polytecnico d'architettura in Milan, Italy (1993).
He was asked by the Ministère de l’Industrie to research and create a program for graduate research in design (1994-95).
In 1998, Pippo Lionni began work on Facts of Life - a symbolic language to question our most profound perceptions with a laugh. First presented at Typomedia 98 in Frankfurt, Facts of Life was published in three volumes by Verlag Hermann Schmidt GmbH Co, Mainz, in 1999, 2001 and in 2002, and produced as a font by Linotype in 1999.
In 1997 he became a member of the AGI. He was awarded the distinction of « Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres » by French Ministry of Culture in 2001.
